 Good Company Guidelines

These documents are mining company guidelines for managing elements of fatigue.

Operator Fatigue Management Guide
Description
Operator fatigue has been identified within the Anglo American group as one of the primary causes of accidents and loss of life, providing a challenge to its Safety Management Programmes. In many different studies in many industries, it has been shown that shift workers are subject to fatigue. It is widely accepted that fatigue of shift workers cannot be eliminated, but can be mitigated to some extent, and can be managed.

Managing Fatigue - A Shared Responsibility: Education For Families
Description
Fatigue is recognised as a key risk for people on roster arrangements and this risk increases with certain job roles, tasks, the general work environment and other factors. In particular risks can increase in the short term when: employees have not had adequate sleep between shifts; on first night shift; at the end of a rotation - the last shift; and in the longer term when: perpetually poor sleep creates chronic fatigue; or general health is poor.

Measures taken to combat driver fatigue
Description
Shift workers face considerable challenges when compared to their day-working colleagues. Not only can a shift worker's health be affected, but people who work night shifts for long periods are at odds with regular sleep patterns. They thus often become uncontrollably drowsy during their work period and may suffer insomnia when they do try to sleep, exacerbating the problem. This contributes to an increase in the number and severity of occupational accidents during the night shift
